Walmart sales reflect consumer interest in recreation and home improvements

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Higher average baskets and strong online business helped drive sales and sales for Walmart US in the first quarter.

Total sales at US discount stores and supercentres rose 5% to $ 93.2 billion. E-commerce sales have climbed 37%, more than double in two years.

Computer hardware sales were stronger than expected thanks in part to stimulus spending, surpassing last year’s COVID-19 inventory spree. Walmart US comp grew 6%, with a 9.5% increase in like-for-like ticket offsetting a 3.2% drop in like-for-like traffic.

General merchandise had the strongest performance, with comp sales up in the 20% range.

“Sales were aided by stimulus spending and reflected customer trends in recreation and home improvement, including categories such as clothing, home, outdoor living, and home improvement items. sport, ”the retailer said.

The story was similar at Sam’s Club, where net sales rose 10.1% to $ 16.7 billion. Comp rose 11.1%. The chain of member clubs reported great strength across all categories, led by home and apparel – where comp jumped into the high 50% range. E-commerce sales increased 47.0% and member revenues increased 12.7%.

For the quarter ended April 30, the company’s total sales increased 2.7% to $ 138.3 billion. Operating profit increased 32.3% to $ 6.9 billion.
